Studio Workshops » Intermediate Glass Workshops - Seminars

In these invitational seminars, students will learn a variety of intermediate techniques which will then be incorporated into several self-directed projects. To be eligible for invitation, students must have completed Essentials II, in addition to a variety of technical mastery workshops. Due to the intense nature of these seminars, space is limited to only eight students. Projects will include working time in and out of the classroom. Throughout the seminars, students will work with small, medium and large kilns, torches, wet belt sanders, flat wheel & angle grinders, sandblasters, glass saws, lathes, die grinders, and more. Extensive cold working techniques and professional mounting and finishing will be a strong focus. As such, seminar participants will have access to studio equipment throughout the course.

Kiln Forming Seminar I

Pre-Requisite: Essentials II

This 8-week seminar will further develop your fusing technique and build your confidence as well as your glass skills. Topics covered will include; POWDERS, “Painting with Light” Bullseye’s workshop with glass powders, working deep casting with imagery, powder parts sheets, creating and working with frit balls ,scrafitto, templates and shading, custom cutting for plate making and slumping, the Geomaster Cutting System, advanced strip cutting/on-edge work, kiln carving, mold making with fiber felt blanket & boards, stringer tapestry, and more. The eighth week of this workshop will culminate in a student showcase event.

This workshop will require a minimum of 4-6 hours each week creating, in addition to firing the kiln outside of class. Students must have access to a kiln.

Pre-Requisite: Kiln Forming Seminar I

This 8-week seminar is designed for kiln formers who want to dive into the world of architectural glass. Interior Design projects will include; Making Sconces—designing lighting projects, Casting a Bathroom Sink—basin techniques, A Backsplash Tile Mural—designing across multiple surfaces, A Table Top—slab design for partitions, and more.

Projects will focus on a number of design and process concerns. We’ll take our projects from concept development into sketching, color samples, and project specifications.Next we’ll focus on documentation, safety, and durability. Then finally through to practical execution and site installation. At the completion of this workshop, students will have a clear understanding of the necessary steps to produce high-quality interior architectural glass pieces. Working thicker and stronger with purpose is the order of the day!

This workshop will require a minimum of 6 hours each week creating, in addition to firing the kiln outside of class. Students must have access to their own kiln. 
 

Bead Making Seminar I

Pre-Requisite: Glass Bead Making II 

This invitational 7-week seminar designed for the intermediate bead maker is the logical “next step” to further develop your bead making technique and build your glass skills. Students will learn how to perfect their bead shapes and design jewelry, using the beads they make in this intensive workshop. New skills presented will include; learning to pull your own custom signature cane, jewelry design, planning for continuity, different types of torch work, and more. The eighth week of this workshop will culminate in a student showcase.

This workshop will require a minimum of 4 hours each week working on the torch outside of class. Students must have their own torch or be able to attend open studio time once a week. This intensive seminar, is limited to 6 students.

NEW! Bead Making Seminar II

Pre-Requisite: Bead Making Seminar I

This 7-week seminar is designed for the upper intermediate bead maker. Now that you have perfected bead shaping and are confident in heat control, you’re ready for advanced techniques in embellishment! Bead maker’s will further develop their technique, and build their repertoire of decorative skills.

Topics covered will include developing focal beads incorporating; metals - fuming; gold and silver and more, enamels, off mandrel work, sculpture, electroforming, plus lathe carving. Students will be making large focal beads building on shapes and techniques mastered in Intermediate seminar. These beads will be the canvas on which small masterpieces will be created each week.

This workshop will require a minimum of 6 hours each week working on the torch outside of class. Students must have their own torch or be able to attend open studio time once a week. This intensive seminar is limited to 6 students per session.
